OUR SCHOOL UNIFORM PAGE

The wearing of our school uniform is an important aspect of each student’s education at Hawkesbury High School.

School uniform:
• Promotes the development of a real sense of identity for students.
• Encourages students to take pride in their school and its achievements.
• Fosters a student’s sense of pride in his/her personal appearance.
• Creates a positive image for the school in the wider community.
• Has a very practical safety aspect in that it enables quick identification of any intruder onto the school premises.

For these reasons, our school community has always strongly supported a compulsory school uniform code.

What is “acceptable” school uniform can sometimes be a contentious issue. It should be pointed out that the school is not a ‘fashion-house’. School policies will not be dictated by the passing whims of what is ‘trendy’ of ‘fashionable’ at any given moment.

It is expected that all students will adhere to the standards of school uniform which have been determined by the school community. Any student who is unwilling to cooperate in implementing the school uniform code may be prevented from attending special school activities (including participation in sporting teams, representative visits, end-of-year formal functions, etc.) and senior students will lose their special privileges.

Any parent who has a financial difficulty in the purchase of school uniform should contact the Principal or Deputy Principal by letter or telephone. Such matters are always handled in complete privacy. It may be possible to make arrangements for some financial assistance, and there is a second hand clothing pool where items may be purchased for a gold coin donation[contact the front office for details].

The following matters should be noted as important requirements of our school uniform code:

1. Students are to travel to and from school wearing correct uniform. They are not to change out of their uniform unless given specific approval to do so by staff.

2. Students should wear the correct daily uniform, or the full PE/Sport uniform when relevant, not a mixture of both.

3. All items of school uniform are to be worn properly at all times. For example:
- buttons should be done up appropriately;
- skirts, shorts, slacks and trousers are to hang from the waist, not let slip down around the hips or buttocks;
- the optional school tie should be knotted correctly under the shirt- collar, not pulled down around the chest;
- the uniform should be clean and in an acceptable condition; etc.

4. If a student cannot wear the appropriate school uniform on any day, a note from home is to be brought to the Deputy Principal’s office before school to explain why the student is not in uniform.
If the reason is acceptable, a uniform pass will be issued to the student. If the student does not have a note, or the reason is unacceptable, the student will be placed on a half-lunch detention to clean-up the playground.

5. Where the uniform guidelines describe an item of clothing as “plain” (e.g. “plain navy blue trackpants”) this means no coloured stripe, bands or patches, no large logos, and no excessive pockets.

6. The following are not acceptable:
a) Jeans, cords, tights, cargo pants/shorts
b) Hipster-style skirts, slacks, trousers or shorts
c) Singlet tops or T-shirts
d) Any item of clothing which has inappropriate writing or pictures
e) Coloured tops worn under school shirts or blouses, especially long-sleeved tops worn under short-sleeved shirts or blouses
f) ‘Exotic’ hair styles or hair colours (e.g. pink, blue, green, purple, etc.)
g) Excessive make-up
h) Excessive numbers of necklaces and bangles, or heavy and bulky items of jewellery.

7. It is acceptable for small earring and studs to be worn in the earlobes. It is not acceptable at school that rings or studs be worn through the eyebrows, nose, lips, etc. Any body-piercing, other than through the earlobes, is not to be visible when the student is at school.
